The first graduate of the Department of Sociology, Janice Klein joined the Children's Bureau—a nonprofit that supports abused and neglected children and families in Indiana—as a social worker in their residential treatment center in 1973. During her career, she served in a range of roles, becoming the executive vice president and chief operating officer from 1997 until her retirement in 2013 (with time also spent as the organization's interim chief executive officer).
Beyond her career at the Children's Bureau, Klein served as a faculty member at the IU School of Social Work and at Ball State University, was a member or officer for multiple not-for-profit organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Martin Luther King Multi-Service Center, and volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul and St. Augustine home for the aged.
