Mary Lou Leighton is known in Indiana as an instrumental philanthropist for the South Bend community, and significantly contributing to several institutions, such as IU South Bend, Saint Mary’s College, and the University of Notre Dame.
Along with her husband, Judd Leighton, their long-standing interest in the arts and their work to enrich the cultural life of the South Bend community, the Leightons chose to ensure the prominence of the educational system in South Bend. Mary Lou remains one the most inspiring women in the history of Indiana, leading the way for many more emerging women leaders in STEM, liberal arts, and artistic fields.
In acknowledgment of her community service in Indiana, financial generosity, and long-standing advocator for affordable education for students from all backgrounds, Mary Lou Leighton was awarded an Indiana University South Bend Chancellor and Provost Medallion in 2000.
