The St. Joseph’s Community Foundation was established in 2003 by CHRISTUS Health to conserve the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who have served others since 1911. The foundation has a focus on community development, urban affairs, parks, health and human services, youth, and education, providing grants to local nonprofits and students. The foundation also administers over 60 scholarship funds for low-income students pursuing careers in medicine, teaching, and engineering.
In addition to addressing immediate community needs, this organization also invests in the long-term prosperity of current and succeeding generations. The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County holds a unique role in South Bend and remains a leading contributor to Northern Indiana.
In appreciation of their support to the South Bend community through their philanthropic leadership and community engagement aimed to enhance the quality of life for the county’s residents, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County was presented with an IU South Bend Chancellor and Provost Medallion in 2001.
