Timothy “Tim” Roemer is an American Foreign Service Officer and a politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1991 to 2003. He was born and raised in South Bend and graduated from Penn High School. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1979, and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. He entered politics while still in college by serving on the staff of U.S. Representative John Brademas.
After completing his doctorate, he held different roles, including working for U.S. Senator Dennis DeConcini of Arizona and being elected as a Democrat to represent Indiana’s 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. During his diplomatic career, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to India from 2009 to 2011. After his ambassadorship, he become president of the Center for National Policy (CNP) and served on the advisory board of the non-profit organization America Abroad Media. Roemer’s work left a lasting impact on both national and international levels, making the South Bend community and state of Indiana proud.
In recognition of his commitment and service to the United States by holding several roles both national and statewide, Roemer was presented with an Indiana University South Bend Chancellor and Provost Medallion in 2002.
