Dot Wiekamp was a remarkable philanthropist and community supporter. Dot and her husband, Darwin Wiekamp, were avid advocates for education and community development in the Mishawaka area. They supported educational institutions and facilities that include the Wiekamp Hall and the Dorothy J. Wiekamp Educational Resource Commons at IU at the Indiana University South Bend campus, and the Wiekamp Athletic Facility at Bethel College.
Wiekamp contributed to the IU South Bend art gallery and more than 30 scholarships that benefited more than one thousand IUB students. She supported local agencies, healthcare programs and the arts; her donations contributed to an addition at the Center for the Homeless and an auditorium at the Center for History.
As a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Mishawaka, Wiekamp’s faith and generous spirit guided her actions. Her work will continue for generations to come, and her legacy will forever inspire others to make their community a better place, by putting talents and resources into action. In appreciation of her outstanding support, dedication, and generosity to St. Joseph County, her eye for potential, and her tireless efforts to increase the prosperity of Mishawaka, Wiekamp was presented an IU South Bend Chancellor and Provost Medallion in 2005.
