- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2013
Michael D. and Nancie Freeborn were honored for their philanthropic support and service during the Spirit of Philanthropy ceremony April 13. Michael is a 1972 graduate of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, and has been a member of the law school's Board of Visitors since 1999.
The Freeborns live in the greater Chicago area, where they are involved in a variety of pro bono and community initiatives. Michael is a founding partner of the law firm Freeborn & Peters. His extensive experience as a trial lawyer has earned him many accolades in the legal profession.
The couple recently established the Michael and Nancie Freeborn Civil and Human Rights Fellowship at IU McKinney, which provides experiential learning opportunities for law students interested in this area of the law. Professor Fran Quigley, '87, and 2Ls Brittany Sutton and Chandler Carney attended the event. Professor Quigley teaches in McKinney's Health and Human Rights Clinic. Sutton was the first recipient of the Freeborn fellowship. She worked at Project HEAL in Baltimore, Maryland, which is the longest running medical-legal partnership for children with disabilities and their families. Carney is the current recipient of the fellowship, and she is pursuing a researcher position in Santiago, Chile, with a governmental organization that assists all member states of the Organization of American States with justice reform.
Spirit of Philanthropy awards honor those who have had a profound impact on IUPUI's growth and development through their gifts and voluntary service. The event is sponsored by IUPUI, Indiana University Foundation and the IU School of Philanthropy at IUPUI.
