About Men's Basketball Team, 1972-1973

The 1972-73 men's basketball team is the second-ever team to earn induction, joining the previously inducted 1972 squad. The 1972-73 team is credited with having played the first full season of any sport in IUPUI history and was led by Head Coach George Dickison and Assistant Saint Samuel (Sam) Johnson. The-then-Metros went 11-14 that season, including opening the year with a 92-56 win over IU-Northwest. Playing with a virtually all-freshman team and no athletic scholarships against some of the powers of the small-college ranks, the IUPUI team performed remarkably well. Dickison's team played a full season without a true home court, setting a foundation for the current day program.

Guard Charlie Battle was the team's top scorer at 13.8 points per game while C.J. Roach averaged a team-high 7.0 rebounds, despite standing just 6-foot-3. Other top players included Jim Fowler (9.6 ppg), Gerald Trotter (9.1 ppg) and Larry Dodge (8.0 ppg). Rounding out the team were center Phil Sheridan, forward/center Bruce Parker, guards Jamie Gill, Marc Coapstick and Jim York; forwards Ron West, Kim Lease, Leon Nellinger and Tom Swain and student manager Bob Coons.
