A graduate of the Indiana Medical College in 1874, Dr. William Wishard served as superintendent of the city hospital of Indianapolis from 1879-1887, deputy coroner of Marion County, assistant surgeon general of the State of Indiana and later as surgeon general of the State of Indiana. The namesake of Wishard Memorial Hospital, he is credited with performing the first operation for removing the lateral lobes of the prostate gland through a perineal opening and for laying the foundation for the hospitals teaching function.
