Shaffer received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from IU East in 2005. Shaffer, Richmond, Ind., is the president of Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County.

In 2020, Valerie Shaffer was presented the Bicentennial Medal for her distinguished service to Indiana University.
