William “Bill” Nelson, professor of finance at Indiana University Northwest, credits much of his success to his alma mater: IU Bloomington. The education he received as an undergraduate was only made possible because of the generosity of others. He earned his bachelor’s in economics in 1968. With that same philanthropic spirit, Nelson has given back to IU Northwest so that students now have the same opportunities and learning experiences he was once afforded.
Bill has taught finance at IU Northwest for more than 35 years, while also serving as the associate dean of the School of Business and Economics. The Nelsons have endowed three scholarships, as well as made a host of other financial contributions to IU Northwest, that assist students in a variety of majors, including, but not limited to, business, nursing, theater, and education
Ensuring classroom innovation and excellence in education, the Nelson Family Fund was established. Through a student-managed investment fund, students have the rare and unique opportunity to invest in the stock market, producing real results. Over the course of the semester, the students use state-of-the-art financial software to do their stock research, while also learning how to conduct fundamental, technical, sectoral, and macroeconomic analysis.
For his unwavering support to IU Northwest, Nelson received the IU Northwest Chancellor’s Medallion in 2017. IU Foundation welcomed him to the President’s Circle the following year at the Benefactor level.
