Phan is the recipient of the 1998 Rome Prize, ASCAP awards; grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ohio Arts Councils, Charles Ives Center for American Music, and fellowships from the Macdowell Colony. He was the guest composer at the 1999 Asian New Music Festival in Tokyo Japan, the 1999 & 1997 New Music Festival at Hamilton College (New York), the 1996 residency with the Kronos Quartet at University of Iowa's Hancher Auditorium, the 1995 Asian Composers' Forum in Sendai, Japan, the 1994 New Music Festival at UC Santa Barbara, and the 1992 Music Lives in Pittsburgh. His performances include: the Kronos Quartet, the BBC Scottish, Radio France, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, Hanoi Conservatory Orchestra. Phan has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the American Composers Orchestra, the Greater East Lansing Symphony, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Samaris Piano Trio, the New York Youth Symphony, La Sierra University. His recorded works include: the Kronos Quartet for Nonesuch. Phan is a former faculty member at the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana, and Cleveland State University.
