Bernice Tanner Richardson was an accomplished educator and administrator. She attended college at Alabama A&M University, St. Joseph College in Whiting Indiana, and Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. Richardson graduated from IU Northwest with a B.S. and a master’s degree in elementary education. She received administrative certification in elementary education from Notre Dame University in 1978.
Richardson began her 41-year career in education teaching at St. Hedwig Catholic School in Gary, Indiana, where she served as a kindergarten teacher and eventually as the principal for five years. Richardson also worked in the Gary Community School Corporation as an assistant principal, taught elementary education at Moorehead State University in Minnesota and served as an adjunct professor at IU Northwest.
Richardson received numerous honors and awards for her achievements in teaching, including national teaching excellence awards and the President’s Medal for Excellence from Indiana University.
