About Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz

Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz earned his B.F.A. in painting from the San Alejandro Academy of Art in 1986 and his B.A. in art history from the University of Havanna in 1994. He later continued his education at Yale University where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D., both in art history, in 2001 and 2004, respectively. He joined the Indiana University (IU) faculty in 2018 as an associate professor of art history and the Tanner-Opperman Chair.

Prior to joining the IU faculty, Martínez-Ruiz held teaching positions at the Instituto Superior De Arte, the Rhode Island School of Design, Standford University, the University of Cape Town, and Oxford University. His research interests include African and African diaspora art; aesthetics and culture; graphic writing systems; rock painting; Afro-Latin American and Caribbean visual culture, art, and aesthetics; theories of the avant-garde; and contemporary theory. He has authored several books, articles, and papers related to these topics and more.

Throughout his robust teaching career, Martínez-Ruiz has been recognized with a variety of honors and awards. He was the recipient of the College Art Association’s Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award, the Herskovits Award, the Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award, and several others.
