About Sonja Olhoft Rego

Sonja Olhoft Rego earned her B.S. in finance from the University of Illinois (U of I) at Urbana-Champaign in 1989 and her M.B.A. in accounting and international business from U of I in Chicago in 1991. Upon graduation, she continued her education at the University of Michigan where she earned his M.A.E. in economics and Ph.D. in accounting in 1999. Rego joined the Indiana University (IU) Kelley School of Business faculty in 2011 as an associate professor of marketing. She was promoted to full professor in 2016. She began serving as the chairperson of the Department of Accounting in August 2020 and the associate chairperson of the Department of Marketing in 2021. She earned the honorary title of Sam Frumer Professor of Accounting in 2018 and the additional, honorary title of KPMG Professor in 2020.

Prior to joining the IU faculty, Rego worked at the New York State Department of Tax and Finance as a Corporate Income Tax Auditor and at Arthur Andersen, LLP as a staff tax consultant. She also has four years of teaching experience at the University of Iowa. Rego’s research interests include the influence of taxes on business decisions, the managerial incentives for tax avoidance and earning management, accounting for income taxes, agency theory, and corporate finance.

Throughout her career, Rego has received numerous awards and honors to recognize her outstanding contributions to academia and research. She earned the Kelley School of Business Service Award in the Spring of 2018, and she also received a Trustees’ Teaching Award in 2014 and 2019 to recognize her outstanding teaching within the Kelley School of Business at IU.
