About Lemuel W. Watson

Lemuel W. Watson is the dean of the School of Education, Provost Professor in the School of Education and the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. Watson earned his undergraduate degree in business from the University of South Carolina, master's degree from Ball State University, and doctorate from Indiana University Bloomington. His research focuses on the systemic and psychosocial development of underrepresented groups, men in the lives of children, LGBTQ, talent management, spirituality, and mindful leadership.

Before returning to IU, Watson served as Distinguished Professor, dean emeritus, and founding executive director of the Center for Innovation in Higher Education at the University of South Carolina. He was also the founding executive director of the Center for P-20 Engagement and dean of the College of Education at Northern Illinois University. Watson has over 30 years of proven leadership experiences and achievements and a strong national reputation in collaborative partnership work and issues of social justice. He is a Fulbright Scholar to Belarus and was awarded the U.S. Embassy Policy Specialist (EPS) fellowship by the International Research and Exchanges Board to conduct research on the impact of the Georgia Institute of Public Affairs. Watson is a senior research fellow at the C. Houston Center at Clemson University and research fellow at the Institute for Southern Studies at University of South Carolina.

Watson received the IU Bicentennial Medal in August 2019 in recognition of his distinguished service as dean of the School of Education, Indiana University Bloomington.
