- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2019
Motivated by her experience working with her sister, Susan, who was diagnosed with an intellectual disability as she entered kindergarten, Katie Stanton-Nichols, PhD, has dedicated her career to providing quality, affordable, educational, and adaptive physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.
While at IUPUI, Stanton-Nichols created the Adapted Movement Programs (AMP). AMP offers family-centered, community-based physical activity programs for all individuals with disabilities. The full-spectrum program is based on the belief that quality physical activity and exercise equip people with enhanced opportunities for healthy, independent, and dignified living. Utilizing undergraduate kinesiology students and trained volunteers, Stanton- Nichols is able to provide clients with specialized programming that meets their individual needs.
The School of Health and Human Sciences is especially indebted to Katie Stanton-Nichols for her ongoing support of this program and her efforts to ensure it will continue benefiting IUPUI and the larger Indianapolis community.
