IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2019

About Robert D. Albrecht

Robert D. Albrecht graduated from the IU School of Social Work in 1964. He then devoted the next 40 years of his professional life to helping others. Albrecht retired as the regional director of the Department of Health and Social Services for Southwestern Wisconsin where he utilized his graduate social work education in mental health, policy, and leadership.

He was a first-generation college graduate whose education was made possible by a scholarship. As a result, he wanted to pay forward the financial assistance that made his social work career possible. Unfortunately, he passed away in April 2017 before creating the scholarship he and his lifelong partner, Barbara Born, had discussed. His desire to help social work students was recently realized when Barbara established the scholarship in his memory.
