- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2019
Julie Hatcher, PhD, is the former executive director of the Center for Service and Learning and associate professor emerita of philanthropic studies at IUPUI. She served as the inaugural director of undergraduate programs in the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which offered the first undergraduate degree of its kind in the nation. Her research focused on civic learning outcomes in higher education, the philanthropic motivations of professionals, the philosophy of John Dewey, and the public role of higher education in civil society.
Throughout her career, Julie worked with many faculty and staff at IUPUI and other national and international institutions to better integrate service into higher education. She values community-engaged learning as an effective way to support the development of civic-minded graduates and professionals. The Hatchers have been generous in their philanthropic support of Indiana University for many years, and the Division of Undergraduate Education wishes to thank Julie for her continued commitment.
