About Kathy Johnson

Kathy Johnson is the executive vice chancellor, chief academic officer, and professor of psychology at IUPUI. Johnson earned her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Ph.D. from Emory University. Her research interests include lexical and conceptual development in infancy, development of symbolic understanding and intense interests and expertise in children. She is also interested in student development and predictors of success and persistence among undergraduates.

In her role as as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer, Johnson plays a key leadership role in developing and guiding the implementation of IUPUI's academic plans and programs. She oversees the process for the recruitment, hiring and advancement of faculty, including promoting and continued success of the campus's efforts to increase the quality and diversity of its faculty. Johnson has authored or co-authored numerous academic articles in journals like the Journal of Educational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Science Education. She has received the Trustees Teaching award IUPUI in 2002 and 2006, Outstanding Female Faculty Leader Award IUPUI in 2003, and was named a Faculty Fellow for the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs IUPUI in 2007.

Johnson received the IU Bicentennial Medal in August 2019 in recognition of her distinguished service to Indiana University as the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer of IUPUI.
