Judith Monroe received an undergraduate degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and an M.D. from the University of Maryland. Additionally, she’s received an honorary doctorate from Purdue University in health and human services. Monroe completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Cincinnati. She also studied at East Tennessee State University, as well as obstetrics through the University of Wisconsin.
Monroe currently serves as president and CEO of the CDC Foundation which has a mission to help the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do more, faster, by forging effective partnerships between CDC and philanthropic and private sector organizations and individuals. Prior leadership experience for Monroe includes serving as director of the Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support (OSTLTS) and as a member of the National Health Service Corps at the Morgan County Medical Center. Monroe was also a clinician educator, and joined the faculty in the department of family medicine at Indiana University. She also joined St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis in a dual administrator role as director of the Family Medicine Residency Program and the Primary Care Center.
Monroe serves on many national advisory committees and boards, such as the Public Health Accreditation Board, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Public Health Leadership Forum, and the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Population Health. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Georgia Global Health Alliance; the National Advisory Committee for the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health; the External Advisory Committee for Purdue University Public Health Graduate Program and the Executive Management Team for the Food Fortification Initiative.
Monroe has received many awards, including the Excellence in Public Health Award from the National Network of Public Health Institutes; NACDS Foundation Excellence in Patient Care Award; the ASTHO National Excellence in Public Health Award and the Governor’s Distinguished Service Medal from Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. In 2019, Monroe was awarded Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of her distinguished service and contributions to worldwide health education.
