Michael Suggs received an undergraduate degree in secondary education and teaching from Indiana University Bloomington. He additionally received a diversity management certificate from Cornell University, and is a graduate of Leadership of Northwest Indiana and the FBI Citizens Academy.
Suggs serves as director of operations, integration and strategy at Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). In this role, he facilitates operating plans and serves as the liaison between operations and public affairs. Suggs began working for NIPSCO in 1981 and served in many different roles, including a distribution engineer, electrical inspector, marketing representative and public affairs manager. Suggs is also president of the board of trustees for the Thea Bowman Leadership Academy, and a member of the board of directors for the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE).
Suggs is an active volunteer and has served on numerous committees and boards. He currently serves on the chancellor’s advisory boards for both Indiana University Northwest and Purdue University Northwest; as a northwest Indiana leadership council member for the United Negro College Fund, Northwest Indiana Council; and a member of the board of directors-and former board chairman- for the Urban League of Northwest Indiana. He is president of the board of Lead College Prep. Charter School of Gary, and a member of the board of directors for Legacy Foundation. He is also a member of Phi Eta Psi National Fraternity and a Lifetime Member of the NAACP. Suggs was recognized as an Indiana Champion of Diversity by Indiana Minority Business Magazine in 2014, and in 2019, received Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of his distinguished service.
