Joseph R. Motherwell is an IU alumnus and former student trustee on the IU Board of Trustees. Motherwell earned his BS in business with a major in finance from Indiana University Purdue University - Fort Wayne in 1987 and a law degree from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis (later renamed the IU McKinney School of Law) in 1991.
While an undergraduate Motherwell served on the IPFW student government, being elected as student body president from 1985 to 1987. He was also a member of the Business Student Advisory Board, the Task Force on Strategic Planning, and the 1966 Leadership Fort Wayne program. While in law school, he was appointed by Governor Robert D. Orr to succeed Thomas Haley III as the seventh student trustee serving from 1987-1989.
Motherwell received the IU Bicentennial Medal in September 2019 in recognition of his distinguished service as the seventh student trustee on the IU Board of Trustees.
