Bisognano is president emerita and senior fellow for Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). She previously served as IHI’s president and CEO for five years, after serving as executive vice president and COO for 15 years. Bisognano advises healthcare leaders around the world. She is also an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a research associate in the Brigham and Women's Hospital Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities.
A prominent authority on improving healthcare systems, Bisognano is recognized as an expert and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. She chairs the Advisory Board of the Well Being Trust, co-chairs the Massachusetts Coalition for Serious Illness Care, and serves on the boards of the Commonwealth Fund, Indiana University Health and Nursing Now. Bisognano is a frequent speaker on quality improvement at major health conferences, and is a tireless advocate for change. In 2019, she was honored with Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of her distinguished contributions to public health.
