Dennis Murphy received a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame, and a master's degree in healthcare administration from Duke University. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health.
Highly respected in his field for innovative strategies and system-wide initiatives, Murphy is currently president and chief executive officer of Indiana University Health. Since joining IU Health, Murphy has played an instrumental role in the expansion of IU Health plans. An accomplished healthcare executive with a litany of accomplishments, Murphy's prior experience includes serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare in Chicago. Also, in Chicago, Murphy was vice president of Ambulatory Services and Financial Planning for University of Chicago Hospitals. Prior to that, he served in a variety of roles, including administrator of the department of medicine, at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a decade.
Murphy serves on the boards of the 500 Festival, Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, Indiana Hospital Association, Indiana Health Information Exchange, Indiana University Health Foundation, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, National Bank of Indianapolis and Riley Children's Foundation. He is a member of the American Lung Association of Indiana's Evening of Promise Gala Executive Leadership Team, and served as event chair in 2016 and 2017. In 2019, Murphy was awarded Indiana University's Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of his distinguished contributions and dedicated service.
