Janette Fishell received degrees in organ performance from Indiana University and Northwestern University. Fishell is currently a professor of music in organ and chair of the Organ Department at the IU’s Jacobs School of Music, where she teaches applied organ and organ pedagogy.
A recitalist with a wide repertoire and interest in music of all periods, Fishell has an especially keen interest in the organ works of J.S. Bach, and Petr Eben, both of whose organ works she has performed in their entirety. She has been featured in live radio broadcasts worldwide, including recital broadcasts for BBC London, NHK Tokyo, and Czech Radio. Fishell is a published author of numerous articles and a book on service playing published by Abingdon Press. Her composed choral and organ music is published by Morning Star Music, St. James Press and Wayne Leupold Editions.
Fishell was named Keyboard Arts, Inc. “Young Organist of the Year” while still an undergraduate. She held a distinguished professorship at East Carolina University’s School of Music, and has received both the 2012 Oswald Gleason Ragatz Distinguished Organist Alumni Award and 2014 Paul Creston Award in recognition of contributions to sacred music. In 2020, she was awarded Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal in recognition of distinguished and distinctive service to the university.
