Mark D. Browning received his undergraduate degree in medical science from Loyola University, and earned his M.D. from Indiana University’s School of Medicine in 1977. A U.S. Navy veteran, he also completed a residency and fellowship at the National Cancer Institute/Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.
Browning is a hematology, oncology and internal specialist, and served as a volunteer clinical professor with IU School of Medicine- Evansville for almost 30 years. Prior experience includes a number of academic appointments while serving with the Navy in Bethesda, Maryland; and Oakland, San Francisco, and San Diego, in California.
Browning has a long commitment to IU School of Medicine, to his patients and to the students who form such an important part of the medical community in southern Indiana. He established the Oncology Hematology Associates of Southwest Indiana Medical Scholarship in 2005 to assist students in overcoming the high cost of attending medical school. Additionally, the Browning family has established three endowed scholarships to encourage medical students from southern Indiana to return home after completing their education to establish their medical practices in the Evansville area. In 2019, Browning was honored with the prestigious J.O. Ritchey Award, which recognizes individuals who have made enduring commitments to the IU School of Medicine in several key areas. He was also awarded that year with IU’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of his distinguished contributions and longstanding support of the university and surrounding community of Evansville.
