About Maria E. Grabe

Maria Elizabeth Grabe received a B.A. in English and communication and an M.A. in communication from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. She has an additional M.A. in international journalism from Baylor University and a Ph.D. in mass media and communication from Temple University.

Grabe came to Indiana University (IU) as a faculty member at the (former) School of Journalism. She served as the graduate director in the department of telecommunications, and when the Media School was established, Grabe was the first associate dean. Prior experience includes working as a television news documentary producer in South Africa during a state of emergency. She is affiliated with the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, as a research associate. Grabe was the chair of the International Communication Association’s Journalism Studies Division, and in 2019 she became a Fellow of the International Communication Association.

Grabe’s scholarly work has been recognized by numerous honors and awards. Grabe’s book “Image Bite Politics: News and the Visual Framing of Elections” received the 2010 Outstanding Book Award from the International Communication Association and the 2010 Distinguished Book Award from the Communication and Social Cognition Division of the National Communication Association. In 2019, Grabe was selected as an International Communication Association fellow, in recognition of her distinguished scholarly contributions to the broad field of communication. Grabe has also received Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of her distinguished contributions and service to the university.
