Michael Bartiss received an undergraduate degree in biology and cultural anthropology from Indiana University Bloomington. He then earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York State College of Optometry in New York City, and an MD degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. While at Buffalo, Bartiss also received the E.J. Weisenheimer Award for excellence in ophthalmology. Continuing his training, Bartiss had an internship at the Graduate Medical/Dental Education Consortium of Buffalo, in internal medicine. It was there that he also completed his residency training in Ophthalmology. After completing his residency, Bartiss began his fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Wills Eye Hospital, a highly prestigious hospital in Pennsylvania.
Bartiss is a pediatric ophthalmologist at the Family Eye Care of the Carolinas, and is board certified in ophthalmology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Optometry, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He is a member of the North Carolina Medical Society. He has served on several committees at FirstHealth of the Carolinas over the years and currently serves as the medical director of the Surgery Center of Pinehurst. In 2019, Bartiss received Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of his distinguished contributions and longstanding support of the university.
