Bret Rothstein earned his B.A. from Reed College in 1989. Upon graduation, he continued his education at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in 1991 and 1998, respectively. He joined the Indiana University (IU) faculty in 2007 as an associate professor of art history. In 2019, he earned the additional, honorary title of Ruth N. Halls Professor of Art History.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, Rothstein served as an associate professor of art history at Rhode Island College from 1998 to 2007. His research interests include visual and material cultures of play, enigmatology, and early modern jokes and games.
Throughout his robust career, Rothstein has been recognized as an outstanding educator and researcher with several awards and honors. Some of which include a research award from the Institute for Advanced Study (2014), numerous research travel grants from the College of Arts and Sciences at IU, a creative research and creative activity fellowship from IU, and more.
