About Jonathon Crystal

Jonathon Crystal earned his B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1992. Upon graduation, he continued his education at Brown University where he earned his Sc.M. and Ph.D. in 1994 and 1997, respectively. Since joining the Indiana University (IU) faculty in 2010, Crystal has served as director and interim director of the Program in Neuroscience, the director of undergraduate studies in the Cognitive Science Program, and a faculty member of the Center for Integrative Study of Animal Behavior. In light of his significant contributions to teaching and research at IU, he was named Provost Professor in 2020.

Crystal’s primary research interests include comparative cognition, episodic memory, metacognition, time perception, circadian rhythms, learning and memory, and disorders of memory. His research lab focuses on developing new animal models of cognition to ultimately provide insight into impairments in cognition observed in people.

A world-renowned leader in comparative cognition, Crystal has been recognized for his contributions to the clinical study of animal models of episodic memory. He has been offered numerous leadership-based research roles throughout his career, including serving as the primary investigator on several grants awarded by the NIH, the editor-in-chief of Learning & Behavior, and the president of Division 3 of the American Psychological Association.
