Dr. Benjamin Gaston earned his B.A. and M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1979 and 1983, respectively. He completed his pediatric residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in 1988. Following his residency, he completed two fellowships in 1993 – a clinical and research fellowship at Bringham and Women’s Hospital and a pulmonary fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2019 as a professor in the Department of Pediatrics. He earned the additional, honorary title of Billie Lou Wood Professor of Pediatrics in 2020.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, Gaston served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Iwo Jima and at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune. He also served as a general pediatrician where he developed a keen interest in studying respiratory diseases. Clinically, he currently serves as the Vice Chair for Translational Research at the Riley Children’s Hospital, the IU Department of Pediatrics, and the Wells Center for Pediatric Research; and he has a pediatric pulmonary practice at Riley.
Continuously funded by the NIH for over 20 years, Gaston is also the principal investigator on a Program Project Grant and several other NIH grants. He has authored over 190 publications and is an inventor on many patents. An innovator, he has also helped to start five companies that are currently active. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Thoracic Society.
