About Shaun Grannis
Dr. Shaun Grannis earned his B.S. in aerospace engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991 and his M.D. from Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine in 1997. Upon completion, he continued his education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) where he earned his M.S. in health services and research and medical informatics in 2003. He later completed a National Library of Medicine fellowship in biomedical informatics through the Regenstrief Institute. He began teaching at the IU School of Medicine (IUSM) in 2004 as a visiting professor of clinical medicine. He has since held numerous appointments and titles at IU, including serving as an adjunct professor in both the School of Informatics and Computing and the School of Public Health and as a professor of family medicine. In 2019, he was awarded the additional, honorary title of Regenstrief Professor of Medical Informatics.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, Grannis worked as a field engineer at Schlumberger where he evaluated oil and gas exploration, operation, and production potential. He also previously held a teaching position at Central Michigan University. He began serving as the Vice President for Data and Analytics at the Regenstrief Institute in 2019. His research primarily focuses on informatics, data analytics, and biosurveillance. He has authored an array of publications on these topics and more which have been published in notable journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the International Journal of Medicine Informatics, and more.
Throughout his robust career in research and academia, Grannis has been recognized with an array of professional awards and honors. He received the Research Frontiers Trailblazer Award from IUPUI in 2013, the International Society for Disease Surveillance Award in 2011, the Distinguished Paper Award from the American Medical Informatics Association in 2011, and numerous others. He was also recognized as a Showalter Scholar by IUSM in 2015.
