Dr. Shelly Timmons earned her B.S. in honors biology and B.A. in rhetoric from the University of Illinois in 1987 and 1988, respectively. She earned her M.D. from the University of Illinois at Peoria in 1991 and later earned her Ph.D. in anatomy and neurobiology from the University of Tennessee in 2002. Timmons joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2019 as the chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Betsy Barton Professor of Neurological Surgery.
Prior to joining the IUSM faculty, Timmons served as the vice chair for administration in the Department of Neurosurgery and the director of neurotrauma at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She also previously served as the director of neurotrauma and the residency program director at Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pennsylvania. Timmon’s career began at Semmes Murphey Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, and she served as an associate professor and chief of the neurotrauma division at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center – Memphis, as well as assistant dean for the graduate medical association.
Throughout her robust teaching, clinical, and research career, Timmons has been recognized with several awards and honors from premier organizations, including the American College of Surgeons. She also holds leadership roles in several national societies and organizations and completed a term as president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in April 2019. She has led or co-led numerous clinical research studies sponsored by the NIH and industry partners.
