Kathleen Bardovi-Harlig earned her B.A. and M.A. from California State University in Northridge in 1976 and 1978, respectively. Upon completion, she continued her education at the University of Chicago where she earned her Ph.D. in 1983. Since joining the Indiana University (IU) faculty in 1985, Bardovi-Harlig has held numerous appointments and titles at the university, including a professor of second language studies and the chair of the Department of Second Language Studies. She was named Provost Professor in 2019.
Bardovi-Harlig's research interests fall into two main categories: the development of tense-mood-aspect systems in second language, and the development of second-language discourse and pragmatics. Most recently, her current work expands her research on tense-aspect to include the expression of future and modality. Her investigation of the interrelation of grammar and pragmatics has led to an ongoing study of formulaic sequences in pragmatics. Bardovi-Harlig has written an array of publications related to these topics and beyond, including books, edited volumes, research publications, encyclopedia entries, and more.
Throughout her successful teaching and research career, Bardovi-Harlig has enhanced the field of linguistics and second language studies by engaging in a variety of service roles. She formerly participated in the American Association of Applied Linguistics Leadership, the SSLA editorial board, and the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawaii. She also previously served as the editor of Language Learning, a journal of research in language studies.
