Dr. Michael Murphy earned his B.S. from Binghamton College in 1985 and his M.D. from Columbia University in 1989. He joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2005 as a visiting assistant professor of surgery. He has since held numerous titles and appointments within IUSM. In 2019, he was awarded the additional, honorary title of Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation Professor of Vascular Biology Research.
Murphy also serves as a vascular surgeon in Indianapolis and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Eskenazi Health-Indianapolis and Indiana University Health Medical Center. He has been in practice for more than 20 years. He is one of 6 doctors at Eskenazi Health-Indianapolis and one of 7 at Indiana University Health Medical Center who specialize in Vascular Surgery. His research primarily focuses on characterizing the innate and adaptive immune responses in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Murphy is a member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American Heart Association, and more.
