Patricia Carlton-Nyangira Is an IU alumnus who earned her master’s degree from Indiana University. She is a member of the 1982 Groups Scholars Program class and a charter member of the establishment of the Groups Scholars Alumni Association. Carlton-Nyangira served Indiana University for over 25 years in the Office of Financial Assistance, School of Optometry, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
She is recognized as an outstanding Anderson Madison Heights High School athlete. Carlton-Nyangira was a 4-year varsity member of the girls’ basketball, volleyball, and track and field teams from 1978 to 1982. As a freshman member of the basketball 26-1 team, Carlton-Nyangira scored clutch free-throws that led the team to state runner-up position in 1979. She received the 1982 Anderson Madison Heights most outstanding female athlete award, tied the school record for most points scored in a single girls’ basketball game, holds the record in the shot put, and received All-County, and All-Sectional recognition in volleyball and basketball throughout her high school career.
Carlton-Nyangira is also graduate of Anderson University where she served as President of the Black Student Union, President of the Model United Nations team, and a Debate team member. In 1992, she received the I.U.P.U.I. Most Outstanding Delegate award and the Anderson University Outstanding Debater award. Carlton-Nyangira received the IU Bicentennial Medal in March 2020 in recognition of her distinguished service to the university.
