Awards

Bicentennial Medal - 2019

About Mark Deal

Mark Deal earned his B.S. and M.S. from the School of Public Health in 1979 and 1986 respectively. While he was a student he played football, center, for the Hoosiers from 1975-1978. Following earning of his bachelor's, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1979 under head coach Lee Corso. The 1979 squad finished with an 8-4 record, including a Holiday Bowl victory over Brigham Young University.

Deal went on to coach the Hoosiers again from 1996-1999. He has held many titles within IU Athletics in offices of external relations, development, and football operations. Deal has served on the I Association Board of Directors since 1999 including leadership positions as vice president (2014-2015) and president (2016-2018). He served on the Faculty Athletics Committee from 2016-2018. Deal has been an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health since 2009.

Mark Deal is part of the first family in IU Athletics history to have four generations of letter winners. His father, Russ Deal, was captain of the Hoosiers 1945 Big Ten Football championship team and is a member of the IU Athletics Hall of Fame. Mark's brother Mike Deal played on the 1967 Big Ten Football champions and 1968 Rose Bowl team. The Deal Family has played on 8 winning Old Oaken Bucket teams. Daughter Carrie Deal Powers played volleyball at Indiana (2005-06), and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2006 and graduated with a degree in special education in May 2009. Mike Deal's granddaughter, Riley Hecklinski, lettered in softball (2018) to make the Deal family the first in IU Athletics history to have four generations of letter winners. Son Casey Deal is a 2013 Indiana University graduate and earned his MBA in 2018 from the Kelley School of Business. He is a full-time instructor in the Kelley School.

In 2019, Deal received Indiana University's Bicentennial Medal in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the university.
