Douglas M. Wilson served as the vice president for university relations and external affairs at Indiana University from 1988 to 1996. Wilson earned a B.S. and M.A. from Miami University in Oxford, OH. During his undergraduate career, Wilson served as a teaching assistant in the history department, a member of Phi Alpha Theta and Phi Delta Theta, and the yearbook photography editor.
After graduation Wilson began his career as an educator teaching at Rocky High School in Cleveland, OH. before returning to Miami University Ohio to work for three years as alumni secretary and then for ten years as director of the Office of Alumni Affairs. Wilson worked two years in development at the University of Oregon before returning to Miami University as vice president for university relations (1982-1988).
In 1988 to 1996, Wilson served as the vice president for university relations and external affairs and was responsible for the development, integration and coordination of constituent communication. He is the founding president of the Indiana University Advanced Research and Technology Institute (1996-1998) and executive director of the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations of the Indiana University Foundation (1998-2001).
Wilson was a highly sought-after member of professional and commissions and councils, including the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Association of Governing Boards, National Conference on Volunteers, Alumni Administration Institute of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the National Conference on the Young Alumnus. He was also a committed member of his community serving as president of the Bloomington Pops Board of Directors, the University Club, Citizens Advisory Board for the Crane Naval Station, the IU Varsity Club Advisory Committee, IUPUI Board of Advisors, Bloomington Mayor's Round Table, Bloomington Rotary Club Foundation, and the Long Range Planning Committee of the Monroe County Community School Corporation. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash, two Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallions, the Diane l. Breeden Catalyst Award from the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, and was named Oxford Citizen of the Year.
Wilson received the IU Bicentennial Medal in September 2019 in recognition of his distinguished service as vice president for university relations and external affairs for Indiana University.
Wilson died on March 5, 2021 at the age of 79.
