Dr. Cathy C. Schubert earned her B.S. from Emory & Henry College in 1995 and later her M.D. from the University of Tennessee in 1999. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in Indianapolis in 2002. Upon completion, she continued her medical training at IUSM and completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine in 2003. Schubert joined the IUSM faculty as an assistant professor of clinical medicine in 2004. She was promoted to clinical associate professor in 2010 and full clinical professor in 2020. She earned the additional, honorary title of Mary Elizabeth Mitchell Professor of Geriatrics in 2020.
Schubert’s research and clinical practice primarily focus on geriatric medicine. She has forged a career implementing, studying, and sustaining innovative models of care for medically and psychosocially complex older adults across all clinical venues (inpatient, outpatient, and home-based) and within multiple types of health systems. She enjoys myriad leadership roles, including the Chief of Geriatrics at the R. L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis and the Director of Geriatrics for Indiana University School of Medicine.
Schubert received the Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement Award in Geriatrics in 2013 for her dedication and leadership in directing care programs to address the specific needs of geriatric patients. She has also published several articles in notable publications, including the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, and more.
