David Nichols earned his A.B. from Harvard University in 1992 and his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 2000. He joined the Indiana University (IU) faculty as a professor of American studies and a professor of history in 2020. At that time, he was also given the additional, honorary title of Carmony Chair and was appointed the editor of the Indiana Magazine of History.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, he held teaching positions at Indiana State University since 2004. Throughout his career in academia, Nichols has written two books, “Red Gentlemen & White Savages: Indians, Federalists, and the Search for Order on the American Frontier” and “The Engines of Diplomacy: Accommodation and Manipulation at the United States’ Indian Factories, 1796-1822". He has also written an array of peer-revied articles, book chapters, book reviews, conference papers, and more.
Nichols has been honored with numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to research and teaching. In both 2010 and 2012, he received the Indiana Humanities Council Grant. He earned the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Pitt-Greensburg Alumni Association in 2003.
