Bambi Sumpter-Gaddist is an IU alumna and AIDS/HIV activist. Sumpter-Gaddist earned her bachelor's degree from Tuskegee University, master's degree from Indiana University, and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. She has worked as a member of the South Carolina State University faculty as well as with the South Carolina Department of Education. She currently is the co-founder, executive director, and principal investigator of the South Carolina HIV/AIDS council, a 501(c)3 nonprofit HIV prevention organization.
Sumpter-Gaddist has committed the past 32 years of her profession life working in the area of human sexuality, with a specific focus on HIV/AIDS/STI community level mobilization, behavioral intervention and research, technical assistance/capacity building, and the elimination of other health disparities. She is a published author and consults with a host of national and local organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Association of Health Education, and selected pharmaceutical companies.
Sumpter Gaddist received the IU Bicentennial Medal in January 2020 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to AIDS/HIV education and welfare.
