Patrick J. McKeand earned his B.A. from the IU School of Journalism in 1963.
McKeand had been publisher of the Sagamore newspaper at IUPUI. Through his devotion, an endowed scholarship for future editors of The Sagamore was established by alumni. He also taught at the School of Journalism for 11 years on the IUPUI campus. Students established a scholarship in his honor. The Patrick J. McKeand "Keep Your Nose to the Grindstone" Scholarship Award is given annually to an IUPUI journalism student.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era, McKeand had been active in professional and scholastic journalism organizations. He had served on the national board of directors and as Region 5 director of the Society of Professional Journalists. He had been on the executive boards of the Indiana Collegiate Press Association, Hoosier State Press Association and the Indiana Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
